Olympic Spirit: He Bing Jiao Honors Injured Carolina Marín with Heartfelt Gesture at Paris 2024

Madrid

It was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful gestures of these Olympic Games. The Chinese athlete He Bing Jiao climbed onto the podium of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a pin from Spain while she won the silver medal in badminton in a gesture of remembrance and affection towards the Spanish Carolina Marín, who was injured and forced to retire in the semi-finals, when she was dominating on the court, due to a new injury to her right knee.

This Tuesday the worst news was confirmed, and that is that the Huelva native has torn both meniscuses and the cruciate ligament in her right knee. This is the third ligament tear she has suffered, since she tore her right one in 2019 and her left one in 2020. Marín will undergo surgery this Wednesday at the Olympia Clinic by Dr. Leyes, a doctor who already operated on her left knee injury in 2021.

However, amidst all the bad news, the Chinese athlete has once again shown a lovely gesture to the Spanish athlete. In a video shared by the Spanish Olympic Committee, He Bing Jiao explained why she went up to the podium with the pin at the medal ceremony: “I wanted to share the honour of being there with her and being together at that moment,” said the Chinese athlete in a video in which she also wished Marín a speedy recovery.

“She has overcome obstacles and injuries before and I trust that she will do it again. I hope that she will return to competition very soon,” explained the Olympic silver medalist, who posed with a Spanish flag with the phrase “Strength Carolina.”
