Shot putter Yemisi Ogunleye secured her place in the final at the Olympic Games in Paris with a strong third attempt in the qualification. Alina Kenzel also advanced on Thursday (08.08.2024).

The best German shot putter could not be satisfied with her first two attempts at 18.01 m and 17.72 m – and if she had stayed that way, Ogunleye would have missed the Olympic final. But the 25-year-old European Championship bronze medalist from Rome showed in her last attempt what she can really do: With a throw of 19.24 m, the Mannheim athlete pushed herself into a place in the final, in the end it was the third best distance in the qualification behind Sarah Mitton from Canada (19.77) and the New Zealander Maddison-Lee Wesshe (19.25). Ogunleye’s personal best is 20.19 m.

Kenzel (VfB Stuttgart) slipped into the final in eleventh place with 18.16 m, Katharina Maisch (LV90 Erzgebirge) was eliminated with 17.86 m.
