Power Surge: Orioles’ Santander and Holliday Lead Charge in 7-3 Victory Over Blue Jays

Two home runs by Anthony Santander and a two-run home run by Jackson Holliday in the seventh inning led the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Santander hit a two-run homer in the first inning and another solo homer to start a three-run eighth inning off reliever Ryan Yarbrough as the Orioles won for the third time in four outings.

The Blue Jays suffered a third defeat in four games in front of 37,547 fans at the Rogers Centre.

In the loss, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his streak with at least one hit to 19 games with a single in the first.

Holliday’s 424-foot bomb to right field off Jays reliever Ryan Burr (0-1) was the second baseman’s second in two games in this series.

Burr and Yarbrough’s mistakes came just hours after Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro told reporters the bullpen has been “an Achilles’ heel for us all year.”

Santander hit his 24th home run since the start of June, a major league high.

Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis bounced back nicely afterward, going five innings, allowing just three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Orioles starter Trevor Rogers also pitched five innings in his second start since being acquired from the Miami Marlins before the July 30 trade deadline. He allowed three runs on seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Blue Jays loaded the bases with singles by Ernie Clement, Guerrero and Alejandro Kirk in the first. Clement scored on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Horwitz.

The Jays then took a 3-2 lead in the second on an RBI single by Brian Serven and a throwing error by Orioles third baseman Coby Mayo.

Orioles reliever Burch Smith (3-0) pitched a clean sixth inning to earn the win.
