Rafael Nadal did not manage to win the medal he was hoping for at the Olympic Games. In the duel of giants with Novak Djokovic, he had no chance in the second round. He has now announced that he will not be competing in the US Open. He is planning his next appearance in Berlin.

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has cancelled his participation in the US Open. “I have decided not to compete in the US Open this year. A place where I have breathtaking memories. I will miss those electrifying and special nights in New York, but I don’t think I could give 100 percent,” the 38-year-old wrote in the evening on X, formerly Twitter. The fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year takes place from August 26 to September 8.

Nadal competed in both singles and doubles at the Olympic Games in Paris. In singles, he lost in the second round to eventual gold medalist Novak Djokovic from Serbia. In doubles, he lost to fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals. According to Nadal, his next appearance is planned for the Laver Cup. The competition between European tennis professionals and the rest of the world will take place in Berlin from September 20 to 22.

Missed six Grand Slams in two years

Nadal, who has struggled with numerous injuries in recent years, did not want to comment in detail on a possible retirement. His eternal rival Roger Federer ended his career two years ago at the Laver Cup in London. Due to the cancellation of the US Open, Nadal will miss his sixth Grand Slam tournament in two seasons.

In total, the Spaniard has won 22 of the coveted trophies at the four most important tennis tournaments. His most recent Grand Slam triumph was at the 2022 French Open. Since then, Nadal has had to take repeated forced breaks.
