Paris FranceJonathan Ruvalcaba became the first representative of the Dominican Republic to reach the final in the 3-meter springboard diving event at the Olympic Games.
The Mexican athlete narrowly advanced to the final of the specialty with a total of 416.20 points in the diving semifinal held this Wednesday at the Aquatics Center as part of the XXXIII Olympic Games taking place in Paris, France.
“I’m happy to qualify for the final. I had worked hard for it. That was my goal in Tokyo. I didn’t achieve it. I finished 13th, less than five points away from making it to the final. But this time I’ve already achieved my goal of being among the 13 best in the world. Now I’m very focused on the final and doing the same thing I do every day: shooting in the best possible way,” said Ruvalcaba at the end of the competition.
Ruvalcaba, who is participating in his second Olympic Games, took the last spot, 12th place, out of the same number of participants who could qualify for the final of the specialty. In the event, 18 competitors were seeking at least one spot of the 12 available.
“The level is very similar to that in Tokyo, because in the end they are the best divers in the world, yes, there are dives with a high degree of difficulty, like those of the Chinese, Mexico, Colombia, with overly complicated jumps, and what must be maintained is the quality of the dive and we will see what happens this Thursday,” added the athlete.
In the qualifying round, held on Tuesday, Ruvalcaba also finished 18th with a score of 363.15. A total of 25 divers participated in the initial test, in which seven were eliminated from the competition.
Meanwhile, the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), engineer Garibaldy Bautista, was satisfied with Ruvalcaba’s performance and was confident that he would continue to do a great job.
“I am satisfied with Ruvalcaba’s diving final and we hope that we can do our best in this final. I am very happy with the work of the federation and the athlete Ruvalcaba,” said Bautista.
