Thunderstorms Interrupt Historic Clásico: A Dramatic Start to Barcelona’s US Tour

The game started as planned, but the thunderstorm caused the action at MetLife Stadium to be halted.

Barcelona have had to contend with the weather on this 2024 tour. If their debut in the United States, in Orlando and against Manchester City, had to delay the start for almost an hour and a half due to an electrical storm that affected the area near Camping World Stadium, in New Jersey things were not much better: the match against Real Madrid was able to start, but it barely lasted 12 minutes before Armando Villarreal, the referee of the Clásico, determined that the match should be stopped for the same reason.

The match was suspended for almost an hour and twenty minutes until it resumed at 8:30 p.m. local time, under persistent rain but safe from the thunderstorm that caused the suspension.

The protocol according to which when there is a thunderstorm, with lightning within an eight-mile radius, any event being held outdoors must be suspended caused the match between the two giants of Spanish football, which practically filled the stands of MetLife Stadium, to be stopped when the clock reached twelve minutes of the first half.

Until then, an excellent header from Pau Víctor, miraculously saved by Courtois in the seventh minute, was the most notable action of a match in which the Barça spirit balanced out the greater experience and strength of a less intense Madrid.

There was not much time to enjoy the game, however, and while there were fears that the match might be delayed in the afternoon due to the intermittent, sometimes very heavy rain that fell on New Jersey, when the rain stopped an hour before the start the organisers explained that there would be no problem playing… They had not counted on the worsening weather conditions and when it started to rain and the first flash of lightning was seen, the party was over.

Half an hour, standing still from the start. And then starting again after an hour and 20 minutes. The most incredible Clásico in history.
