Uncertain Futures: Can Cvancara and Hack Find Their Place in Gladbach’s Revamped Attack?

They should be responsible for the goals – but will both stay in Gladbach? Tomas Cvancara (l.) and Robin Hack (r.), here on September 17, 2023.

He was supposed to be Borussia’s biggest transfer, but so far things haven’t gone as planned. Now there could even be a separation between the player and the club – not least because of the competition that has been brought in.

The transfer movements of Borussia Monchengladbach started surprisingly early, but have since stalled. Three new signings have already been announced, and the Foals fans are still waiting for a sale. For the first time, a striker has now appeared on the list of possible departure candidates.

Four goals in the debut season – Gladbach transfer can do more

Four goals, two assists and a total of less than ten full games played. The record of Tomas Cvancara (23) in his debut season as a Gladbach striker reads rather modestly. Especially considering that the Czech, signed from Sparta Prague in 2023, cost a total of 10.5 million euros in transfer fees.

By comparison, Borussia only had to shell out a little over a million euros for fellow striker Robin Hack (25). The former Bielefeld player scored ten goals and was crowned Gladbach’s most successful goalscorer of the past season.

Cvancara’s slump was mainly due to injuries. Small to moderate injuries repeatedly hampered the offensive player, and reports of training absences quickly outweighed his goal tally.

There is no question that the 23-year-old is going into the new season with fresh ambitions. More goals, fewer injuries and, above all, more self-confidence are required. However, the international player (six international matches, one goal) does not necessarily have better prospects than during his first Fohlen preparation in the summer of 2023.

With the signing of Heidenheim striker Tim Kleindienst (28), who cost Borussia around seven million euros in three installments, Roland Virkus (57) presented serious competition to his former king transfer.

As the „Bild“ This circumstance is even causing Cvancara to think about a transfer! At this point in time, however, a sudden departure after just one season on the Lower Rhine is considered very unlikely.

It is not just the convincing preparation that speaks in favor of staying in Mönchengladbach. Kleindienst, who was also one of the winners of the training camp, is clearly the number one in the center of the attack, but Cvancara is just as clearly right behind him. The tall attacker (1.90 m) could also be a starting eleven option on the right wing or in a system with two strikers.

In addition to the looming financial loss of a transfer, Cvancara’s sporting potential is also an argument for the new attack at VfL. 20 scorers in 30 competitive matches for Sparta Prague are on record from the season before his signing. The next attempt under coach Gerardo Seoane (45) is therefore much more likely than a lightning transfer. One thing is clear: Tomas Cvancara still has something to prove in Gladbach.
