1. Badminton Bundesliga: Strong start from WAT-Simmering despite defeat

WAT-Simmering, Austria‘s largest badminton club, was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga last season. The traditional Viennese club did not win the opening game last Sunday, but they are still optimistic.

VIENNA/SIMMERING. Last season, WAT Simmering was always the top team in the 2nd league. However, since they were promoted to the Bundesliga, they have not been considered favorites. Nevertheless, the defending champion ASV Pressbaum was able to put a lot of demands on the WAT.

The points for the only Viennese badminton first division team were won on Sunday, October 13th by Katharina Hochmeir and Yevheniia Kantemyr in the women’s doubles and Yevheniia Kantemyr in the women’s singles. Pascal Cheng took the points in the men’s singles. Young talent Cheng celebrated his first success in the first Bundesliga with his victory over national player Armin Sarosi.

A 4-4 draw was within reach. New signing Kantemyr, originally from Ukraine, showed himself confidently by winning two points and celebrated a perfect debut. In the current world rankings for women’s doubles, Kantemyr is in 38th place.

Want to score in the second game

“I am very happy with the start of the league. Probably the best team in the 1st Bundesliga was really challenged, full spectators and a strong win from Pascal Cheng. We want to score points in the second round against Ohlsdorf,” hopes head coach Manuel Rösler.

The players will meet the Sportunion Ohlsdorf on Sunday, November 3rd. They will play the second round in a home game. You can cheer them on from 12 p.m. in the Mollardgasse sports hall.
