During the night of Thursday, the first of two semi-final meetings will be played between Brazilian Botafogo and Uruguayan Peñarol.

But the meeting is marred by chaos in Brazilian Rio de Janeiro, where Botafogo is home and the first semi-final is played.

Peñarol supporters have ravaged the city and, among other things, set fire to vehicles and robbed a kiosk, states bold.dk and refers to Brazilian g1.

After about an hour and a half of vandalism, the military police and the fire brigade moved in and then at least 200 Uruguayan supporters should have been arrested and weapons should have been seized, according to bold.dk which refers to Brazilian g1.

The Brazilian newspaper also claims that a local resident of Rio has set fire to one of Peñarol’s supporter buses.

All this has led to no away supporters being allowed at the match and those who were not arrested by the police after the disturbances are therefore forced to return home, according to bold.dk which refers to Brazilian g1.

In the other semi-final, Brazil’s Atlético Mineiro won the first of two meetings against Argentina’s River Plate 3-0 at home. The second meeting in both semi-finals will be played in a week.
