During the 2022 World Cup, many questions were raised that had nothing to do with football.
And for the 2034 World Cup, the same questions are likely to arise again, that of the question of human rights and non-respect for them.
In an attempt to put an end to the controversies while the World Cup has not yet been officially awarded to Saudi Arabia, human rights groups, supporters and other unions have pointed out the biased evaluation of AS&H Clifford Chance, a law firm based in Riyadh.
“Eliminate all potential obstacles”
“It has been clear for over a year now that FIFA is determined to remove all potential obstacles to successfully handing Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman the 2034 World Cup,” said co-director James Lynch. of Fairsquare, one of the signatories.
“By producing a report of such mediocrity, AS&H Clifford Chance, part of one of the largest law firms in the world which values its expertise in human rights, is helping to raise a final stone of major stumbling block,” he adds.
“Not at all acceptable result”
We see that the analysis was carried out in a very unsatisfactory manner to the extent that a series of rights were not analyzed, were not taken into account in the analysis, and the result is not at all acceptable because that we are ignoring many points which are delicate precisely for Saudi Arabia”, explains François Graas, coordinator of Campaigns and advocacy at Amnesty Belgium, at the RTBF.
As a reminder, it is on December 11 that the attribution of the World Cup will be officially decided. Until then, opponents of Saudi Arabia will try to win their case and ensure that the country does not obtain the organization of this event.
