By Carlos Javier Jarquín

In Nicaragua, historically, the most practiced sports disciplines have been baseball and boxing. Indeed, at the Central American level Nicaragua has been one of the countries that has distinguished itself most internationally in these sports, but in recent years baseball and boxing are in decline and football has gained strength and is becoming more and more Nicaraguan are infected by the joy that football transmits.

In the last quarter of 2023, the first Concacaf Central American Cup 2023 took place in Central America. Teams from seven countries participated in this edition: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The champion of this tournament was the Alajuelense club from Costa Rica, while Real Estelí FC took second place. Also in this year’s edition the Nicaraguan rojiblancos reached the semi-finals.

For November 2023, I asked the writer, poet and composer Pedro Alfonso Morales Ruiz if he could write a song in homage and recognition to Real Estelí FC, for its great and historic achievements in Central American football. At that moment Pedro Alfonso told me that he would try and so, between December 21 and 24, 2023, he managed to create the lyrics and music of this song entitled Mí Real Estelí.

Subsequently, together with Pedro Alfonso, we invited Gibraltarians John Adam Mascarenhas, Teresa Mascarenhas and Anselmo Ochello to join this musical project, which is already a reality today. We have done this work with great appreciation, respect and admiration. John Adam, sound engineer and co-arranger. Teresa is co-arranger, editor and video master and Anselmo Ochello collaborated as guitarist.

This musical production was made by MAC Studio Production of Gibraltar-UK. The launch of the video clip will take place this Saturday 19 October at 10:00. (Central America) and 6pm (Gibraltar) and you can enjoy it on the MAC Studio Production YouTube channel. On behalf of all the members who made this musical production possible, we sincerely and infinitely thank the board of directors of Real Estelí FC and in particular its general director, Helmuth Hurtado, for collaborating with us with the audiovisual contents for the production of this video clips.

Below, I share the structure and elements of the song created by its composer.

Structure

The song consists of two general parts with ten verses in total: the first part covers from verse 1 of four unrhymed verses and free verses that are said or recited through verses 2 and 3 of three free verses that are sung and closes with the refrain of lines 4 and 5 of three free verses. The second part repeats verse 1 recited as verse six, passing through verses 7 and 8 sung and ends with the repeated refrain of verses 9 and 10.

Elements

The song is based on three major historical elements of Estelí:

The petroglyph called El Brujito, the Shaman or healer: it is the most important ancestral symbol of Estelí and from the little witch we take the hat, the maracas, the shawms and the devil’s tail which are the component elements of the little witch.
According to Bayardo Gámez, anthropologist and historian, on July 15, 1982, the Estelí Culture Council approved the petroglyph as the emblem of the city.

He represents the Texox, shamans or healers, symbol of an ancestral identity and out of sympathy they call him El Brujito.
Alejandro Dávila Bolaños, doctor and historian, quoted by Gámez, says that the Witch has an X in the center and the box that encloses it represents the four cardinal points.

In turn, Gámez, quoting Joaquín Motilla Vila, says that the shaman or healer has a dress on his head, waffles or rattles for his ritual dance and an animal tail to cover his body.

The city of Estelí from its origins and important places: According to historians, the city of Estelí had three settlements: the first in the archaeological region of Las Pintadas; the second on the banks of the Agüesgüespala river; and the third in the Michigüiste valley. Precisely in Las Pintadas the Brujito was found… In this case we go back to the origins of the city and add details such as the tobacco, the Estanzuela, the Tisey, which are representative places of the city.

The Real Estelí team with its history founded in October 1961 and its struggle to achieve victories at the Independencia Stadium for the Nicaraguan fans. In short, the idea of the song is a tribute and recognition to the team for its historic successes in football.
