Action week for more respect

Action week for more respect

As part of the “Week of the Referee” from 19th to 27th. In October, nine Swiss sports associations are calling on athletes and spectators to treat referees with more respect – on and off the field. The action week was initiated by Swiss Olympic’s “cool and clean” prevention program.

With Swiss Volley, Swiss Basketball, Swiss Unihockey, Swiss Hockey, Swiss Badminton, Swiss Table Tennis, the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, the Swiss Handball Association and the Swiss Football Association, nine major Swiss sports associations are committed to greater respect for referees. Together with Swiss Olympic’s “cool and clean” prevention program, the associations want to thank the referees for their commitment and remind spectators and players that fair behavior towards them is important both in and outside of sport.

No referee, no game

During the “Week of the Referee” from October 19th to 27th, 2024 We want to put our referees in the foreground, because games can only be held thanks to their mostly voluntary work. We say THANK YOU with warm applause as the referee enters the field. The captain’s handshake before and after the end of the game is now standard anyway!

Strengthen skills for life

When working as a referee, you learn and strengthen various skills such as taking responsibility, resolving conflicts, enforcing rules, communicating clearly and purposefully, making decisions in a matter of seconds and always keeping an overview. These skills not only help in sports, but also in professional and private areas.

Is this something for you too? If you are interested in working as a referee, you can find further information at www.werdeschiri.ch.

RESPECT REFEREE means…

1) …that the referees are also allowed to make mistakes. They are only human and have to make decisions within a split second.

2) …that we do not allow ourselves to be distracted from our performance in controversial situations. Emotions are part of sport, but emotional reactions should never hurt.

3) …that we do not criticize or comment on the referees’ decisions. Only our captain speaks to him or her during the game.

4) …that all players thank the referees after the final whistle. They love sport just as much as we do and often do their work on a voluntary basis.
