The international judo delegations have arrived in Alghero to participate in the 28th Trofeo Riviera del Corallo, a highly prestigious event for men’s team judo. Organized by the Arti Marziali Sardegna company, chaired by maestro Gavino Piredda, this competition sees the participation of over 50 athletes from seven countries: Italy, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Moldova and Romania. The event, which will be held on 19 and 20 October, represents an important opportunity for Alghero to host international athletes, many of whom occupy important positions in the world rankings.
Among these, Denis Vieru stands out, bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games in the category up to 66 kg, an athlete who conquered the podium by beating very high-level opponents, such as the French Walide Khyar. The Alghero dojo, the beating heart of the competition, is ready to welcome the athletes for the weigh-in operations which will begin on Saturday 19th morning, followed by the team draw. The competitions will start at 3pm, with direct eliminations which will lead to the awarding of the trophy the following Sunday. A special moment will be the team parade on Sunday morning, during which each nation will be represented by five athletes carrying their own flag, preceded by the young people of the Judo Club Alghero, a club that since 1978 has been committed to transmitting values such as respect, self-control and friendship to generations of boys and girls.
The trophy was created by the Bottega Orafa Agostino Marogna and the event enjoys the support of the Sardinia Region and the Municipality of Alghero. This year too, the Riviera del Corallo Trophy represents an opportunity for the city to consolidate its bond with judo, a sport that carries forward not only a tradition of competition, but also of education in the noblest values of sport.
