NFL championship player with Swiss origins, Aidan Hutchinson (24) suffered a serious injury on Sunday as his Detroit Lions team won 9-47 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
In a fortuitous collision with his teammate Alim McNeill, the 2nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, a colossus measuring 2.01 m and 122 kg, broke the tibia of his left leg.
Hutchinson was transported to a Dallas area hospital where he underwent surgery. The season of the Michigan native, who plays as a “Defensive end”, is over. The unfortunate man therefore only played five matches (4 wins, 1 loss).
“It’s an unfortunate loss for us,” lamented teammate David Montgomery. “It’s a big, big, big blow because of the kind of guy Aidan is and the kind of character he has and what he brings to the locker room and to this team.” He added: “I know as far as I’m concerned, I’m going to take that very seriously for a guy like Aidan because he was the heart of this team and always will be.”
McNeill called the injury “terrifying to see.” He did not realize the severity although he was involved in the sequence. “I didn’t know if it was him or not, but I felt someone’s leg against mine and I saw Hutch on the ground… It’s crazy.”
Aidan Hutchinson wears a Swiss flag on his helmet because he has Swiss roots. His great-grandfather, Giuseppe Bernardi, was from Medeglia in the canton of Ticino.
