On Tuesday, an Emirati court issued a ruling to imprison Zamalek players Mustafa Shalaby and Nabil Emad (Dunga), and the former goalkeeper and current football director of the club, Abdel Wahed Al-Sayed, for a month, on charges of assaulting public officials during the semi-final of the Egyptian Football Super Cup that took place in Abu Dhabi.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court confirmed in a statement on its official website, “The imprisonment of three defendants from the Egyptian club, Zamalek, for a month, and each of them was fined 200,000 dirhams (54,000 US dollars), for convicting them of committing the crime of violating the safety of public officials while performing their work duties, and committing acts of… “It would disturb public order and cause riots in front of the fans” during the Zamalek and Pyramids match, which was held in Abu Dhabi on October 20.
He explained that the defendants did not comply with “regulatory controls,” and that the employees were “charged with securing the sporting event.”
Zamalek’s media spokesman, Ahmed Salem, told Agence France-Presse, “The club’s lawyer has been assigned to file an appeal today.”
Video footage spread on social media showed Zamalek players getting into an argument with one of those in charge of security at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi during the “Al-Abyad” match with Pyramids in the semi-finals, before the events developed into beatings and punches, which led to the imprisonment of the players and the administrator after they were accused. One of the security personnel assaulted him.
Zamalek issued an official statement regarding the events that accompanied the team’s confrontation against Pyramids, expressing its full appreciation to the UAE and all the parties responsible for organizing the Super Cup.
