Andreas Sander: German ski ace makes rare nerve disease public

The <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/01/ski-world-cup-in-wengen-debacle-among-german-ski-racers/" title="Ski World Cup in Wengen: Debacle among German ski racers”>German ski racer Andreas Sander has revealed a serious cell disease and is in danger of missing the entire World Cup season. The 2021 downhill runner-up reported that he was diagnosed with mitochondrial dysfunction. This means that the mitochondria, components and energy suppliers of human cells, do not work properly.

Sander has already ruled out starting on the first descent of the winter in Beaver Creek (USA) in December. Sander reported that it is impossible to predict whether and when he will be able to ski competitively again.

The 35-year-old has not been able to train in the past few months and has been ordered to take a complete break from sports since the beginning of this week. “I’m just going for a walk,” he said as part of the official outfitting of the German Ski Association (DSV) in Nuremberg. “And when I go for a walk I sometimes have to sit down because my body is just so tired.” He also has problems concentrating. Sander described that, in the doctors’ opinion, the dysfunction could be a result of many infections in recent years.
