1908 – Birth of Arturo Frondizi
The lawyer and politician Arturo Frondizi was born in Paso de los Libres, Corrientes. He was president of Argentina between 1958 and 1962, when he was overthrown. He promoted foreign investment and founded the Integration and Development Movement.
1922 – The March on Rome
Fascist militants led by Benito Mussolini march towards Rome with the aim of seizing power. King Victor Emmanuel III refuses to declare a state of siege and appoints Mussolini head of government, beginning the fascist dictatorship in Italy.
1933 – Birth of Garrincha
Manuel Francisco dos Santos, better known as Garrincha, is born in Magé, Brazil. He was one of the most talented footballers in history and played a decisive role in Brazil’s two-time world championship in 1958 and 1962.
1951 – Juan Manuel Fangio’s first world title
At the Pedralbes circuit in Spain, the Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio wins the Formula 1 Grand Prix and obtains the first of his five world titles.
1958 – Election of John XXIII as Pope
Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli is elected Pope and adopts the name John XXIII. His papacy will bring important changes in the Catholic Church, among them, the convocation of the Second Vatican Council.
1973 – Presentation of the album “Artaud”
Luis Alberto Spinetta presents his album “Artaud” at the Astral theater in Buenos Aires. Considered a masterpiece of Argentine rock, the album was released under the name of his dissolved band, Pescado Rabioso.
1982 – Socialist triumph in Spain
The PSOE, led by Felipe González, wins the elections with an absolute majority. It is the first left-wing government in Spain since the Civil War, and marks the closing of the Transition to democracy.
1983 – The “cajón” of Herminio Iglesias
Peronism closes its presidential campaign on Avenida 9 de Julio. The act is remembered for the gesture of the gubernatorial candidate Herminio Iglesias, who burns a coffin with radical colors, on the eve of the elections that would mark the return to democracy.
1999 – Death of Rafael Alberti
The Spanish poet Rafael Alberti, a member of the Generation of ’27, dies in Cádiz. Exiled for his communist militancy, he lived in Argentina and returned to Spain in 1977. He was awarded the Cervantes Prize in 1983.
2007 – Election of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner as president
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner becomes the first woman elected president in Argentina, succeeding her husband Néstor Kirchner and obtaining 45% of the votes in the first round.
2022 – Death of Jerry Lee Lewis
The iconic rock musician and pioneer of the genre, Jerry Lee Lewis, dies at 87. Famous for his provocative piano style, he was nicknamed “The Killer” and left a notable legacy in the history of rock and country music.
