ATP: Gabriel Diallo loses in the final of the Almaty tournament

Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo fought hard before losing in the final in Almaty on Sunday, while Karen Khachanov prevailed 6-2, 5-7 and 6-3.

Ranked 26th in the world, the Russian won in two hours and 24 minutes ahead of Diallo, 118th at the start of the competition.

Diallo was trying to win a first ATP title. He will reach 87th place in the rankings.

Third seed in Kazakhstan, Khachanov earned a seventh career title.

“It’s a lot of emotions. I’m relieved and super happy, Khachanov said, quoted by the ATP website. You can’t expect it to be easy in the final, but it was going very well for me until 6-2 and 4-2.

“Then he played more relaxed. His balls had a little more bite and he changed the look of the match. »

The 23-year-old Canadian had a 7-6 advantage in aces, but six of the nine breaks went in favor of the 28-year-old Russian.

Down 2-4 in the second set, Diallo saved five break points in a 15-minute game.

Played indoors, the Almaty tournament is part of the ATP 250 series.

Khachanov signed a second triumph in 2024 after Doha, in February.
