Lorenzo Musetti produced an exceptional performance yesterday to qualify for the semi‐final of the Vienna tournament, beating Alexander Zverev in three sets: 2–6, 7–6(5), 6–4.
The Italian is having a very good year in 2024, and shows that he can be dangerous on all surfaces, even against a player as solid as Zverev.
After his victory, he notably returned to one of his flagship shots, his one-handed backhand, explaining that despite the disadvantages, the naturalness of this shot added a lot to his game.
“I’ve always played with a one-handed backhand since I was a kid and I think obviously the benefits are that you can probably get more feel on the slice and the drop, let’s say, the tactile side of the game. But There are also, I would say, disadvantages in this modern era, because as I mentioned, it’s probably easier to counter with a two-handed backhand. It’s also easier to cover the ground because you have more support on the arm and I think the best players like, for example, Zverev, Sinner or Alcaraz use it very well and I think they can build a career on it. But I’m happy with the one-handed backhand and will continue to use it. I think it’s probably my most natural shot and obviously there are some downsides, but there’s a lot of upside to my game.”
