As expected, Austria’s American football national team has easily overcome the first hurdle on the way to defending their European Championship title.
The European champions clearly won against Hungary 58:3 (31:3) in Budapest on Saturday.
Head coach Max Sommer‘s team will now face Serbia on October 27th (1:00 p.m.) in Salzburg. If this compulsory task is also won, Red-White-Red will be in the European Championship semi-finals. This will be held next year.
The game was already decided in the first quarter
The game in Budapest’s Kincsem Park was already decided after the first quarter with three touchdowns for the AFBÖ team, Tobias Bonatti, Yannick Mayr and quarterback Nico Hrouda were present in the Hungarians’ end zone. Mayr doubled the score before the break.
In the second half, Richard Weber, Julian Kapellari, Johannes Schütz and Florian Wegan contributed further touchdowns to the unchallenged success.
“I was really extremely satisfied with how our boys pulled through and never left any doubt as to who was the better team on the field. I’m proud that Team Austria played today the way Team Austria should play,” said Sommer of the game.
