Badminton club Badminton 50+ Heers recently invited friendly clubs from other Limburg municipalities for a friendship tournament in the sports hall.

“The club was founded twelve years ago by Daniel Jospin and Marie-Hélène Claes,” says secretary Marcel Budenaers. “Before the official start-up, Daniël gave initiation lessons for people over 50. Soon our club grew through word of mouth and we had over 20 participants. We now already have 41 members. Our oldest player is 77 years old and the youngest is 56. We play weekly in the sports hall on Monday and Thursday mornings. We are a group that aims to provide sporty relaxation to people over 50 from Heers and the surrounding area so that their mobility and flexibility remain at their best. In addition, every game morning is about friendship and conviviality.”

That friendship was also central to the tournament that the club organized for friendly clubs. “We got to know some other Limburg badminton clubs for seniors in Limburg,” Marcel explains. “For example, friendship tournaments are held alternately every year. This year it was our turn to give everyone a sporty afternoon. We had five clubs visit De Raes sports center last week: Badminton Wellen, Bazo Zoutleeuw, Badminton Nieuwerkerken, BadNet Runkst and Badminton Zonhoven. In total we were 53 players. We didn’t keep score, here it was purely about friendship and reunion.”
