Barendrecht’s Dazzling Stunts and Throws Knock NAC Out of the Cup: A Thrilling Upset

In the first round of the cup, BVV Barendrecht pulled off a stunt by beating NAC Breda 2-1 on their own field. Thanks to goals from Wouter Vermeer and Brent Vugts, the Red-Whites achieved a surprising victory.

Lashing out

Barendrecht opened the scoring early in the match. In the ninth minute, Vermeer took advantage of a poorly headed ball by NAC defender Jan Van den Bergh and delivered a devastating strike in one go, giving his team the lead.

Although Lars Mol scored the equalizer for NAC in the fiftieth minute, there was no further response from the professional club. In the absolute final phase, Barendrecht started again with a final offensive that resulted in a corner. The winning goal came from the corner by Vugts, who subtly shot the ball past NAC goalkeeper Daniel Bielica from the edge of the sixteen-meter area.

Euphoria

After the match, goal scorer Vugts and Barendrecht goalkeeper Jomar Gomes were overjoyed with the result against the current number seven in the Eredivisie. Despite the euphoria, Vugts indicated that the victory was no surprise to him: “We just played our own game. You can defend yourself, but then you are only lagging behind the facts.” When asked what time the 22-year-old attacker had to show up for work the next day, the answer was: “Actually 9 o’clock, but I’m going to make a call in a moment.”

It was an emotional evening for ‘cup keeper’ Gomes. After the match he was in tears on the field: “I knew I could let go of everything in this match. I did it for some people who came to watch.” As goalkeeper coach of LS Voetbalacademie, the 24-year-old goalkeeper took thirteen of his young talents to the match. “I’ll be in front of them again tomorrow morning.”
