Baseball: In New York, the myth of the Yankees is eternal

The team has not won the Major League Baseball (MLB) title since 2009, but its past speaks for itself, with 27 crowns in all. It bounced back well this year, finally living up to the investments, with a payroll of some $325 million over the season.

The Yankees qualified for the final this weekend by beating the Cleveland Guardians (4-1 in the series). Starting Friday, they will face another legendary franchise, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Take a good look around you while reading this article. On your bus, your train or on the street, there is a good chance that you will come across someone with the famous letters N and Y on a cap, jacket or hoodie. They have become iconic.

Even more than just the name of the New York Yankees franchise, yet the 2nd most powerful in the world of sport – the brand is estimated at 7.1 billion dollars (nearly 6.6 billion euros) according to Forbes – just behind the Dallas Cowboys in American football (9) and far ahead of Real Madrid in football (11th, 6.1), the most powerful ball game formation on the planet.

“Initially, the brand was successful because of the team’s victories,” explains Daniel Burch, a die-hard Yankees fan and well-known blogger in the Bronx. In the 1990s, rappers, actors and musicians born in New York wore clothes from this team, because it was good (editor’s note: crowned in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000), quite simply. Today, a whole generation of children and young adults who grew up idolizing these people also want to wear these symbols and these clothes. It’s not Jennifer Lopez who will say the opposite.
