Basketball. End of series at the Palais for Caen BC which loses against Antibes

A week after the defeat on the floor of leader Blois, Caen Basket Calvados hosted Antibes on Friday October 18, 2024. In a Sports Palace dressed in pink and with their Pink October collector jersey, the Caennais did not do poorly, but ended up losing at the end of the match (73-79).

An almost perfect second quarter

Caen BC started the meeting well and takes the lead at the entrance thanks in particular to five quick points from Wendell Davis Jr. (7-3, 3′). But Antibes remains calm and regains the advantage thanks to a transformed basket with the mistake of Yampabou Palo (9-14, 5′). The gap remains until the end of the first quarter, even if the Caennais have left a few points on the free throw line (21-24, 10′).

From the start of the second quarter, Caen BC revive a dynamic and gets back in front thanks to two three points from Antoine Rojewski and Pierre Hannequin (27-24, 12′). Antibes is forced to take a time out, but nothing helps. Caen does not collect a basket and seems impregnable on the rebound. The volume increases in the bays of the Palais des Sports and the gap increases (31-24, 14′). Stéphane Eberlin’s men realize the almost perfect quarter and the gap reached ten points (37-27, 16′). Defensively, every opposing shot is contested and every rebound is contested. On offense, despite a few points still being abandoned en route to free throws, the ball is circulating and the shots are rather interesting. But Antibes is not 6th in Pro B for nothing. Little by little, the visitors caught up before the break (37-32, 18′). Stéphane Eberlin takes his first time out. Caen then puts an end to his opponent’s close encounter and returns to the locker room two possessions ahead (43-37, 20′).

A fatal last quarter

Returning to the floor, the Caennais put the pressure back on over Antibes and further increase their lead by a few points (49-37, 22′). But a cog then seizes and the CBC no longer managed to score for more than three minutes. Antibes took the opportunity to gradually come back into the lead and even got back in front (52-56, 27′). Fortunately, Yann Siegwarth managed to relight the Palace. First on a three-pointer, then thanks to good defense to provoke an opposing technical foul. He scores the penalty free throw, and puts Caen BC back on level terms (56-56, 28′). The Palais des Sports then exploded when the same Yann Siegwarth registered another three pointer in transition after an interception by Malela Mutuale (61-56, 29′). But Yempabou Palo manages to cool the atmosphere a little by scoring four consecutive points in a few seconds. After three quarters, the Caennais count a little point ahead (63-62, 30′).

Each shot becomes harder and Caen BC is left behind at the start of the last quarter by scoring only two points in three minutes (65-71, 33′). Caen is hanging on, but Antibes does not intend to let this victory slip away. Two minutes from the end, the Sharks are eight points ahead (67-75, 38′). The CBC tries to come back by all means, but they start too far and have to give in. for the first time at home this season (73-78, 40′).

The Antibes reception was probably the first big test Caen BC at home this season. Stéphane Eberlin’s men did more than resist, but the opposition was too strong.
