Bundesliga 7th matchday: Borussia Dortmund defeats FC St. Pauli

Borussia DortmundFC St. Pauli 2:1 (1:0)

At the start of the seventh matchday, Borussia Dortmund won 2:1 (1:0) against St. Pauli. Two weeks after the defeat at Union Berlin, the victory was not a confident performance either. St. Pauli suffered its fifth defeat of the season, but once again showed itself to be combative.

Dortmund started the game with good opportunities, but the underdogs from Hamburg held on defensively. In the 30th minute of the game went St. Pauli then even supposedly in the lead. However, Morgan Guilavogui’s goal was disallowed after a long VAR check due to a narrow offside position. Overall, Dortmund had more of the game and took the lead shortly before the break through Ramy Bensebaini (43′).

The restart was initially delayed due to technical problems with the referee. St. Pauli then kept up with the favorites from Dortmund as best they could and were rewarded late: in the 78th minute, Eric Smith equalized with a remarkable long-range shot. But shortly afterwards Serhou Guirassy (83′) scored to give Dortmund the lead again.

“The aftertaste is initially bitter after the game. I think there could have been more,” said St. Pauli striker Johannes Eggestein after the game. His coach Alexander Blessin, however, praised his team’s “great performance”. Dortmund’s Julian Brandt also recognized St. Pauli’s performance in the interview and was happy at the same time: “The victory is important for us. That’s all that counts.”

On the next matchday, St. Pauli welcomes VfL Wolfsburg at Millerntor. Dortmund travels to Augsburg, but first plays in the Champions League against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
