Bundesliga 7th matchday – Sunday: Werder Bremen beats Wolfsburg, Union Berlin wins against Kiel

VfL Wolfsburg – SV Werder Bremen 2:4 (1:1)

On the seventh matchday of the Bundesliga, SV Werder Bremen won against VfL Wolfsburg. In the away game, Bremen won 2:4 (1:1) against Wolfsburg.

After Wolfsburg’s initial lead through Tiago Tomás (19th minute), Bremen’s Mitchell Weiser (45th + 5th) equalized. This was followed by goals from Felix Agu (51st), Marvin Ducksch (67th) and Marco Grüll (72nd) for Werder. Joakim Mæhle (79′) scored another goal for Vfl shortly before the end. His teammate Patrick Wimmer had to leave the field in the 68th minute of the game after a red card. He had only played three minutes.

Bremen dominated the game in the early stages and repeatedly tried to quickly bridge the midfield. After just a few seconds, Grüll missed a scoring opportunity for the guests. His teammate Romano Schmid’s shot (4th) was deflected.

Gradually the hosts also found their way into the game. Jakub Kamiński’s (13th) attempt from 20 meters went over the goal. Wolfsburg’s lead through Tomás’ goal six minutes later was helped by a mistake by Werder’s goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

Wolfsburg’s captain Maximilian Arnold had to leave the field due to an injury after a header duel and received his fifth yellow card because he left the field too slowly. This means he is suspended for the next game. Bremen also had to substitute after an injury. Defender Anthony Jung injured his right thigh and was replaced by Amos Pieper.

For Bremen it is already the third win in the fourth away game. Coach Ole Werner’s team jumped to eighth place in the table. The Wolfsburg team have been waiting for a sense of success in the home arena for more than five months. On Saturday, Bremen will face Bayer 04 Leverkusen, while Wolfsburg will play FC St. Pauli on the same day.

Holstein Kiel – 1. FC Union Berlin 0:2 (0:1)

Meanwhile, 1. FC Union Berlin secured a win against newly promoted Holstein Kiel. In front of more than 15,000 spectators, the Unionists won the away game against Kiel 2-0 (1-0).

Right at the start, the game had to be briefly interrupted due to pyrotechnics. Shortly afterwards scored for Union Berlin Aljoscha Kemlein (18th minute of the game). The team then defended their lead confidently. Tom Rothe (89th), who had already made it 1-0, followed up shortly before the end and scored with a header to make it 2-0. “Tom will certainly be the future left full-back in the national team,” said Union President Dirk Zingler.

Ten minutes after the opening goal there was bad news for Union Berlin: Jeong Woo Yeong had to replace the injured Tim Skarke. In the second half, Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow stopped attempts on goal by midfielder Nicolai Remberg and Finn Porath. The guests gave the Kiel team a little too much space. But the Berliners initially didn’t develop enough promising opportunities either. Rönnow received a yellow card for a time game in the 73rd minute.

Union Berlin has thus consolidated its place in the European Cup places. With their fourth win of the season, coach Bo Svensson’s team rose to fifth place. Bundesliga newcomers Kiel, who were on par in the second half, are still waiting for their first three points and are in 17th place. On Saturday, Holstein Kiel will play against VfB Stuttgart, while on Sunday Union Berlin will face Eintracht Frankfurt.
