After the total failure in the Champions League, Dortmund’s series of bankruptcies continues in the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig is now at the top of the table.

Augsburg vs. Dortmund – 0:0

After the five-goal blackout in Madrid, coach Nuri Sahin experienced the next bitter away flop with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. After a top start with a goal from attacker Donyell Malen in the 4th minute, BVB failed and deservedly lost 1:2 (1:1) at FC Augsburg. Four away games, one point – the prominent BVB team is not a national championship contender under the inexperienced head coach Sahin, but is sinking into mediocrity.

“Today it’s important to finally get the three points,” was Sahin’s clear demand in the Sky interview before kick-off. The head coach’s expectations were disappointed four days after the bitter Champions League evening at the Bernabeu Stadium. In Spain, Sahin’s changes made a decisive contribution to the team’s downfall.

With just 13 points, Dortmund are already seven points behind leaders Leipzig, who they host next Saturday. Speaking of which.

Leipzig vs. Freiburg – 3:1

After a catastrophic half, RB Leipzig turned the game around and stormed to the top of the table. With the 3-1 (0-1) win in the Bundesliga top game against SC Freiburg, the Saxons remain unbeaten after 18 games and are currently three points ahead of FC Bayern. But the Munich team can climb back to the top with a win on Sunday against bottom team VfL Bochum.

Ritsu Doan (15th minute) gave Breisgau the lead in front of 45,918 spectators before Willi Orban (47th) equalized. Lutsharel Geertruida (58th) turned the game around with his goal before Loïs Openda (79th) increased the score further.

Stuttgart vs. Kiel – 2:1

After the Champions League party at Juventus Turin, VfB Stuttgart is back on track in the Bundesliga. The German runner-up defeated newcomer Holstein Kiel on Saturday, narrowly but deservedly, 2-1 (1-0) and remains within sight of the top third of the table. Thanks to goals from Deniz Undav (19th minute) and El Bilal Touré (61st), coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s team ended a series of three games without a win in the league. Kiel, which is stuck in the bottom of the table, is still waiting for the first Bundesliga victory in its club history. Armin Gigovic’s goal (84′) came too late.

St. Pauli vs. Wolfsburg – 0:0

The wait for promoted team FC St. Pauli for their first home win in the Bundesliga since February 2011 continues. Despite being clearly superior at times, Hamburg only managed a 0-0 draw in the northern duel against VfL Wolfsburg in a game that was not always of a high quality. This means that they remained without a goal of their own in the fourth game of this season at Millerntor at home and are still in the relegation zone.

For Wolfsburg, the lucky point win was a bit of balm after the disappointing 2:4 against Werder Bremen six days earlier. For them it was the seventh away point, but the demands are different.

Mainz vs. Gladbach – 1:1

FSV Mainz 05 is still waiting for its first home win of the season in the Bundesliga. Even in the 1-1 (0-0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday it wasn’t enough for success in their own stadium. The hosts deservedly took the lead at the start of the eighth matchday with an own goal from Gladbach’s Stefan Lainer (55th). Just two minutes later, the guests equalized through new national player Tim Kleindienst.

Mainz were the better team for much of the game, although they had to replace their captain and young international Jonathan Burkardt due to an injury after just 20 minutes. After the second home draw, FSV is further in the lower midfield of the table with nine points, while Gladbach has one point more.
