World No. 8 Casper Ruud missed his debut at the Masters 1000 in Bercy. He was picked up straight away by Jordan Thompson (28th in the world) in three sets. The Norwegian, seeded number 7, was unable to find the weapons to counter the aggressive play of the Australian, solidly anchored behind his baseline and who had qualified for the second round after beating Pedro Martinez in two sets (6-4, 6-4).
Credited with an impressive number of unforced errors (53), Ruud was unable to get out of the bad patch which saw him eliminated at the start of Basel by the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets ( 6-3, 3-6, 6-3) or at the Stockholm tournament, in the second round, by Lorenzo Sonego (6-3, 7-6). In the round of 16, Thompson will face, for his part, Adrian Mannarino or Zizou Bergs, recent defeater of Richard Gasquet for his last Bercy.
