The National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) showed that 47% of food collected in five markets nationwide exceeded the pesticide index allowed by Peruvian legislation, in which celery led the list.
According to the samples analyzed at the Santa Anita Market, The vegetable in question is the food with the highest proportion of pesticideshaving 21 toxic residues such as permethrin, profenophos and chloranthin, which is not registered for use in this specific vegetable.

The second product with the highest insecticide index was the Chinese onion, with the presence of nine pesticides, followed by the pepper with two samples declared unfit for human consumption. Only the tomato was free of chemicals.
The study was carried out by the laboratory accredited by Senasa, Mérieux Nutrisciences, where they evaluated 60 samples of celery, Chinese onion, pepper and tomato in the Santa Anita Wholesale Market (Lima) and challhua markets (Huaraz), The Dove (Arequipa), Wanchaq (Cusco) and Wells (Huanuco).

The monitoring took place between September 6 and 10 of this year, analyzing multi-residues that identified more than 700 chemical substances. The information was shared in the Third Monitoring of Pesticides in Food.
