The construction of the new Piancastagnaio sports hall originally planned next to the tennis club in via Spartaco Lavagnini has changed location. Mayor Franco Capocchi announced this, indicating as a variation to the initial project the area of Via Grossetana where the Madonna di San Pietro theme park was created with the new horse track and where the traditional Palio of 18 August is held.
“A different space – as illustrated by the architect Massimo de Francesco, creator of the project – compared to the origin. With this variant we will be able to fill some gaps present in the previous design. A large space that will give the possibility of playing and being able carry out sporting activities to all those local associations of judo, volleyball and other sports disciplines with an expansion of the needs greater than those foreseen in the previous site precisely near the tennis club where we had to limit ourselves, as the area is very close to the town center “.
In Piancastagnaio there are many sporting and competitive activities that involve an increasingly large part of the youth population and beyond. The sport is practiced all year round but particularly in the winter period. Sport which involves, as we were saying, young people, very young people, adults in the various disciplines with local athletes who in many cases achieve and have achieved national, European and world results. The need for a sports hall has become more acute than ever for several years. Currently the place where training and matches take place as well as various gymnastics sessions for adults too is the gym of the ‘Anne Frank’ middle school. The construction of the new sports hall in a decidedly ‘green’ area among the greenery of the chestnut trees and very far from the town center should finally make up for a lack of sport in Piana.
