City and university honor Olympic and Paralympic achievements – News portal

The Olympic and Paralympic year 2024 has been a successful one for the Ruhr University Bochum and the city of Bochum. On October 16, 2024, for the first time, both of them jointly honored the athletes from Bochum and the Ruhr University who took part in the games. Seven of them came to the celebratory reception in the town hall.

In addition to the athletes, the RUB rector and the mayor of Bochum, several other actors from the city and the RUB were invited to the reception.

“We as the city of Bochum are proud of and happy about you. For representing Bochum, but above all for your commitment and performance in your discipline. Congratulations to all of you,” said Bochum’s Mayor Thomas Eiskirch.

“Thanks also to the RUB for the special regulations that enable athletes to combine both.”

A special highlight: Pia Greiten brought her bronze medal. “I thanked the Ruhr University live in the Sportschau after our medal win because I really appreciate what the RUB does for us competitive athletes.”

In addition to the students, a research assistant from the Ruhr University in Paris also won a medal: Sarah Brüßler, who could not be present, took silver in the 4-person kayak. She works in the teaching and research areas of eHealth and sports analytics.

In addition to current students, RUB alumni also took part in the games in Paris. For example, Sonja Greinacher won gold at the Olympic Games with a huge sensation in the 3×3 basketball team. Kathrin Marchand also rowed in the mixed foursome at the Paralympic Games to fourth place.

World University Games 2025 in Bochum

The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will take place from July 16th to 27th, 2025 and Bochum is one of the central venues.

In addition to the athletics in Wattenscheid’s Lohrheide Stadium, there will be a large science congress as well as the 3×3 competitions in basketball and wheelchair basketball in the Centennial Hall.
