Cowboys won’t use injuries as an excuse not to improve

“We just have to trust our training and the brothers we play with on the field,” Overshown said. “We have many injured players and so do they, but we cannot use that excuse [para] not play good football. We have all been playing this game for a long time and know our ultimate goal, which is to finish 1-0 each week.

“That’s the plan for this week too.”

It’s always a foregone conclusion that the 49ers will play the Cowboys as if the fate of the world depends on not allowing Dallas to get a win, regardless of who is available to play and who isn’t; and the Cowboys know it very well.

The biggest key will be stopping the running game, regardless of who receives Brock Purdy‘s passes, as that has been a key flaw of the defense that has led to slow defensive starts and, combined with the Cowboys’ offensive struggles, to has often sent them into a tailspin at home.

The Cowboys have performed slightly better on the road, although not by much, so forcing Purdy to play a one-dimensional game could very well tip the odds in the Cowboys’ favor on Sunday night.

“He definitely does, and when you have a defensive coordinator like Coach [Mike] Zimmer, you know he has the answers to the test,” Overshown responded when asked if it is the lack of execution that is fueling the problems. “We have to focus on our job and we have to take responsibility for doing what he tells us to do, [pero] we’re losing sight of that in the game.

“And once we start slow, we don’t get it back. We have to go out and start fast, attacking them and not getting attacked.”

This weekend’s battle will be the 41st time the two organizations have met, including the postseason, with the 49ers’ three-game winning streak giving them a 20-19-1 lead over the Cowboys in the series. A win in Week 8 would not only even things up for two clubs that are also tied with five Lombardi trophies each, but it could also determine the trajectory of both teams heading into the second half of the season.

That’s while they both feverishly try to be the first of the two to reach a sixth ring.

“We’ve got to get going,” the former third-round rookie said. “Those first six weeks (September football, early October football) you’re still trying to figure it out. We’ve seen some ups and downs. So we know this is a good opponent to look forward to, and in a crazy environment.

“There is the [darlo] everything, and we have to do the same.

And… for four full quarters.
