Cuban baseball player Lourdes Gurriel Jr, outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was chosen as a finalist for the Gold Glove award in Major League Baseball (MLB), according to reports officers.
Gurriel was among the three finalists as the best left fielder in the National League of Major League Baseball, although the favorite to win the Gold Glove in this position is Ian Happ of the Cubs.
“Happ, who has won the NL Gold Glove in left field the last two seasons, could do it for the third time now. The Cubs outfielder led all left fielders,” they detailed from the MLB website.
Regarding Gurriel, sports reporter Francys Romero confirmed on his Facebook profile that the Sancti Spiritus native was chosen among the LF finalists for the 2024 Gold Glove in the National League.
“His other two opponents are Ian Happ (Chicago Cubs) and Brandon Marsh (Philadelphia Phillies). Gurriel had 4 runs saved while Happ recorded 8 saves with an 8.8 range factor and Marsh saved 7,” he noted.
“It seems to me that Happ is the favorite among these three candidates. Likewise, being appreciated among the three best LFs in the National League is an enormous merit for Gurriel Jr. Remember that coaches and managers vote for the Golden Gloves and players from the organization itself cannot be chosen,” he added.
The Rawlings Baseball awards will be revealed on Sunday, November 3, on ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight.”
Both leagues feature three finalists for each position, including utility, which was awarded for the first time in 2022.
To choose the winners in the nine traditional positions, the 30 MLB managers and up to six coaches from each team voted for the players in their league, without considering those from their own team. These votes represent 75% of the total, while the remaining 25% corresponds to the SABR Defensive Index.
Regarding the utility position, Rawlings worked with SABR to develop a special defensive formula, independent of the normal selection process.
