Manchester United has suffered its fourth league defeat of this season at West Ham United. When they visited ‘The Hammers’ in London, the score was 2-1 for the home team, partly thanks to a late penalty. Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt caused the penalty.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United has fallen to a disappointing fourteenth place in the Premier League due to the new defeat after nine games.
The match was initially influenced in a positive way by the Dutch. In the 73rd minute, Crysencio Summerville scored for West Ham’s 1-0. The former player of Feyenoord and ADO Den Haag, among others, escaped his guard Christian Eriksen and tapped the ball in at the far post.
Joshua Zirkzee, who came on as a substitute in the 79th minute at Manchester United, quickly helped his team get the equalizer. The Dutch striker headed a ball towards the goal, after which teammate Casemiro headed in the 1-1 from close range.
Ten Hag under fire
Manchester United had plenty of chances to decide the match before half time. But United coach Ten Hag saw his players miss one opportunity after another. Diogo Dalot even shot over after he had already rounded Lukasz Fabianski, the goalkeeper of West Ham United.
The pressure was already very high for Ten Hag before the match and the final phase in London will only increase that pressure. The visitors had to swallow a bitter pill just before the end.
A match between De Ligt and Danny Ings was not judged to be foul, but referee David Coote was called aside by the video referee. After studying the images, the ball still hit the spot and West Ham had the perfect opportunity to take the lead.
Captain Jarrod Bowen stood behind the ball and beat former Ajax player André Onana. The game was extended by no less than twelve minutes of injury time, but there were no more big chances for the Ten Hag team.
