At the Challenger tournament on the Spanish east coast, Dennis Novak won the round of 16 match against Cristian Garin in two sets and is the only Austrian to remain in the quarter-finals.
After Joel Schwärzler (ATP-375th) was eliminated against Briton Jan Chionski (ATP-177th) in two sets (3:6, 2:6) on Thursday afternoon, Novak (ATP-298th) played in the early evening hours against Garin (ATP 122nd).
After a temporary 5:2 lead, the first set ultimately went to the Austrian 6:4. In the second set, Novak forced a tiebreak with the score at 6:6. In this, the 31-year-old from Wiener Neustadt kept the upper hand and converted the match point to 7-2 after a total of 104 minutes of play.
In the quarter-finals, the Lower Austrian will meet the Portuguese Jaime Faria (ATP-168th) tomorrow, Friday (from 6:00 p.m.).
