DFB Cup, 2nd round: Leverkusen gives Elversberg no chance, Leipzig beats St. Pauli

Bayer 04 Leverkusen – SV Elversberg 3:0 (3:0)

In the second round of the DFB Cup, Bayer o4 Leverkusen clearly beat SV Elversberg. In the home game, the Werkself won 3-0 (3-0) against second division club Elversberg. Leverkusen was eliminated against the Saarland team in the first round of the cup (3:4) in the 2022/2023 season.

Striker Patrik Schick put Leverkusen in the lead with two early goals (2nd + 9th minute of the game). The Spaniard Aleix García increased the score with a free kick before the break (36′). The Elversberg team, where coach Horst Steffen had to replace the injured captain Robin Fellhauer at short notice, were clearly inferior, especially in the turbulent initial phase. Leverkusen had 87 percent possession of the ball, made one quick attack after another, and goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof made a few saves to prevent a major defeat.

RB Leipzig – FC St. Pauli 4:2 (3:1)

The two-time cup winners RB Leipzig also lived up to their role as favorites against Bundesliga newcomers FC St. Pauli. The Saxons beat the North Germans 4:2 (3:1) and are, like Leverkusen, in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

In Leipzig, Yussuf Poulsen was man of the game with two goals (12th, 30th), while Christoph Baumgartner (17th) and Antonio Nusa (80th) also scored for RB. The goals for St. Pauli were scored by Morgan Guilavogui (28th) and Eric Smith (59th).

FC Augsburg – FC Schalke 04 3:0 (1:0)

FC Augsburg also reached the round of the last 16 teams in the game against FC Schalke 04. With a 3-0 (1-0) win against the struggling second division team, Augsburg shot their way into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup for the first time in five years.

As in the Bundesliga game against Dortmund, Alexis Claude-Maurice was crucial for the hosts. However, the French offensive player was lucky with his shot in the 26th minute when the ball bounced so badly on the grass for Schalke goalkeeper Justin Heekeren that he was no longer able to react decisively. Substitute Arne Maier (87th) and Samuel Essende (90th), who was also brought into the game, brought a sigh of relief to the Bundesliga club shortly before the final whistle.

Kickers Offenbach – Karlsruher SC 0:2 (0:0)

Karlsruher SC won the away game against Kickers Offenbach. The second division soccer team won 2-0 (0-0) against the last fourth division team remaining in the competition. The goals in front of 20,071 spectators at Bieberer Berg were scored by Budu Siwsiwadze (62nd minute) and Marcel Beifus (72nd).

Compared to the 5-0 win against Sportfreunde Lotte in the first round, the KSC had a lot more trouble this time. There was no sign of a two-class difference in an uneventful first half. The Kickers held up well and were particularly attentive on defense. There was only one threat in the first 45 minutes in front of the Offenbach goal, when an attempt by Dzenis Burnic went over the goal from a promising position (26th).
