The former US Open winner recently said goodbye to the tennis stage in front of 10,000 spectators. noe.ORF.at looks back on Thiem’s greatest successes and defeats.
The Lower Austrian shaped the local tennis sport for a decade. Born on September 3, 1993 in Wiener Neustadt, Dominic Thiem won 17 tournaments, including the US Open. This made him the second Austrian to win a singles Grand Slam title, 25 years after Thomas Muster at the French Open.
At a youth tournament in St. Pölten in 2010, his great talent was already apparent to many. A year later he made it to the final of the junior competition at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris. A few months later, the young star defeated Austria’s tennis legend Thomas Muster in the generational duel at the ATP tournament in the Vienna Stadthalle.

From 2014 onwards, his career really took off: in February, Thiem made it into the top 100 of the world tennis rankings. In May 2015 he won his first ATP tournament in Nice, France. In 2016 he also reached the semi-finals of the French Open, won his first lawn title in Stuttgart and moved into the top ten of the world rankings for the first time with seventh place.

In the following four years there were four more ATP tournament victories, in which the Lower Austrian defeated world stars Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
He also reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament four times. In 2018 and 2019 he lost against Rafael Nadal at the French Open, and against Novak Djokovic in Australia in 2020, before he celebrated the biggest victory of his career on September 14, 2020: at the US Open he defeated Alexander Zverev and thus triumphed at one for the first time Grand Slam tournament.
The tide finally turned when Thiem injured his wrist at the grass tournament in Mallorca in the summer of 2021. A long break was followed by several comeback attempts and coaching changes. But the former number three in the world rankings was no longer able to match previous successes. In May 2024, Dominic Thiem announced the end of his career, and in October, at the age of 31, he brought his outstanding career to a close at a large farewell party with numerous guests as part of his home tournament in the Wiener Stadthalle.
