Chinese website in the United States reports that a shooting occurred in central Mississippi early Saturday morning, killing three people and injuring eight others, police said. At least two people fired shots, police said.
At that time, a school’s homecoming football game had just ended, and hundreds of people were celebrating. Local Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said that during the celebration, a fight broke out and gunshots were heard.
The police said that there were 200 to 300 people celebrating on a small road at the time. The gunfire caused them to flee in all directions, and the scene was chaotic.
The specific location of the shooting was about 5 miles outside of Lexington. A few hours earlier, there had been a football game during Holmes County Unified School’s homecoming celebrations. After the game, many young people walked to the path to celebrate.
The Sheriff confirmed that the three deceased were 25-year-old Martel Gibson, 19-year-old Shundra Chestnut, and 19-year-old John Jenkins. The injured were airlifted to local hospitals for treatment.
Police are currently collecting ammunition at the scene to determine how many rounds were fired.
March said shootings have been an “intermittent” and worrying problem in the county of nearly 16,000 residents, with young people often pulling out guns over a disagreement.
