Edwards: towards a future in the NFL?

Anthony Edwards, Minnesota’s star and gold medalist with the U.S. Olympic team this summer, has announced his intention to explore a career in the NFL if he ever wins the NBA championship.

Anthony Edwards is often referred to as the future face of the NBA in the United States, succeeding established stars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant when they retire. However, his basketball career might not last as long as people think. Indeed, the Minnesota winger recently celebrated his 23rd birthday during the Olympic tournament, a victory he obtained with the Team USA team, and his statements cast doubt on the longevity of his career on the court.

Edwards told ESPN: “I told my friends that if I win a title in the next three or four years, I will turn to football. » Such a victory with the Timberwolves would constitute an unprecedented achievement for this team founded in 1989. Their best performance dates back to last May, with an participation in the Conference semi-finals, where they lost to Dallas. It was their best result since their Western Conference final lost to the Lakers twenty years ago. A recent trade saw team icon Karl-Anthony Towns traded for New York’s Julius Randle. Could this reshuffle allow the Timberwolves to aim even higher, or even win a title? The coming months will tell us.

Edwards and his passion for football since childhood

Until 2029, Anthony Edwards is under contract with Minnesota. Last year, he already insinuated that he could well be “the first to move from the NBA to the NFL”. In his youth, he played American football with the Atlanta Vikings and distinguished himself as one of the best running backs in the country at just 10 years old. However, he eventually turned to basketball, following in his brothers’ footsteps. Chosen first position by the Wolves during the May 2020 Draft, Edwards, nicknamed “Ant-Man”, admitted that he was not “really 100% invested in basketball” and that he would have preferred to be selected in the NFL. Perhaps his dream of shining in American football will come true in a few years…
