Despite a poor performance, Eintracht Frankfurt recorded a must-win in the Europa League. Eintracht won in the reformed mode against the Latvian champions Rigas Futbola Skola 1-0 (0-0). Hugo Larsson scored the winning goal in the 79th minute. The Frankfurt team had a disappointing performance for long periods in the duel with the outsiders and were lucky not to equalize when the Latvians shot against the crossbar shortly after the opening goal. At Eintracht, as announced by coach Toppmöller, 18-year-old Can Uzun celebrated his debut from the start of the game. With two wins and one draw, the Frankfurt team met expectations after three match days.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, on the other hand, suffered their first defeat. The Bundesliga club lost 0-2 (0-1) to Portuguese cup winners FC Porto despite an appealing performance. At the Estádio do Dragão, Tiago Djaló (45th + 2 minutes) and attacker Samu (75th) scored the goals for the former Champions League winners. In the European Cup season so far, Hoffenheim had won a 1-1 draw at Danish club FC Midtjylland and a 2-0 win against Dynamo Kiev.
