The US basketball league is targeting the European market and is already in talks. Will an engagement follow soon?
The NBA is in talks with the world basketball association FIBA about possible investments in Europe. The best league in the world officially announced this on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum said the NBA is focused on “working with FIBA and our partners in Europe to capitalize on these untapped opportunities and continue to grow basketball there.”
According to Tatum, the talks are still in an early phase and there is no time frame. “We think there is an opportunity to find a better model for European basketball,” said Tatum, who also believes there is a demand for it. Basketball in Europe currently has “less than one percent of the commercial market,” explained the 55-year-old.
NBA boss Adam Silver recently said that there was currently “no concrete plan for Europe”, but that the possibility was being “intensively examined”.
