F1: Frans Verschuur slams FIA chairman: ‘Resign and leave’

Jos Verstappen’s former team boss Frans Verschuur is not pleased with the recent actions of FIA president <a href="http://www.archysport.com/2022/02/formula-1-upgrades-the-sprint/" title="Formula 1 upgrades the sprint”>Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Verschuur states in the F1 At The Tablepodcast that the chairman is concerned with all kinds of matters that he simply should not interfere with.

In recent weeks, Formula 1 has not always been about the sporting aspect. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen was under a magnifying glass because he had said ‘f*cked’ during the press conference. In response, the stewards handed out community service to the Dutchman, but it is still not known what this entails. It comes from FIA president Ben Sulayem, who places the emphasis on different priorities than his predecessor Jean Todt. Apart from the jewelry incident with Lewis Hamilton or, for example, the possible interference in the outcome of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2023, in which the chairman may have played a role in retaining Fernando Alonso’s third place during that race. It paints the picture of a chairman who likes to be in the foreground and, according to Verschuur, things are going completely wrong there.

He interferes with things he should not interfere with

“What he should do is just resign and leave. What a moron that guy is. He interferes with all kinds of things that he shouldn’t interfere with. He then intervened with Alonso with the stewards, that there was a mistake there and then he intervened. The mistake had been suppressed and all that kind of thing. That’s all his fault,” Verschuur gives his unvarnished opinion about the president of the car association.

Don’t interfere with Verstappen’s statements

Ben Sulayem took over from Jean Todt at the end of 2021, who mainly performed his chairmanship behind the scenes. “We didn’t have any of that under Jean Todt. Of course he comes from a country with those tea cosies, where they have that influence. But he is now in a world sport, he doesn’t have that influence there, so he shouldn’t do that. He has to do his own business and not interfere with what Verstappen says and all that kind of stuff, get over it,” said Verschuur.
