Austria’s federal anthem continues to cause debate, particularly because of the problematic text adjustments from 2012. The author Ludwig Laher criticizes the inconsistent revision of the text and questions the use of terms such as “jubilation choirs” in times of burgeoning nationalism. The national anthems of the Austrian federal states are also criticized because they often contain historical inaccuracies and German national elements. Despite calls for new versions, as in the case of Lower Austria, the anthems remain unchanged, which is met with incomprehension.

There is a problem when the Federal Army Guards Music plays the federal anthem on the national holiday this Saturday at the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Vienna Hofburg and one or two people around them quietly sing along to the lyrics. And no, it’s not the daughters who made it into the text in 2012, with the well-known consequences: the vocal melody jerks because the “big daughters and sons” can’t be squeezed into the meter so easily. And a culture war broke out, in which no one apart from Andreas Gabalier wants to take part anymore.
