Fitness exercise: The lift from behind

In the series “Our Personal Trainer,” Berlin fitness coach Sebastian Grüner helps us become stronger, healthier and more beautiful. This article is part of ZEIT am Wochenend, issue 42/2024.

Requirement: Similar to the exercises we presented in the last four weeks, the lift from behind is a partner exercise. Fitness exercises are twice as much fun as a couple. So forward this article to your favorite colleague, husband or pizza delivery person.

This is how it works: If you want to be lifted first, get into the push-up position: your hands are on the floor about shoulder-width apart, your arms are straight and your abdominal muscles are tense so that you don’t fall into a hollow back. While you remain in this high plank position, your partner stands behind you, grabs your ankles with both hands, lifts you from behind like a wheelbarrow, and begins rowing.
