Thomas Tuchel is set to become the first German to become national football coach in England. There is still speculation about important key points of the surprising deal.
According to media reports, Thomas Tuchel and the English Football Association FA quickly agreed on the German’s commitment as national coach. Just a few days after rumors of negotiations intensified, the amazing personnel appointment is apparently perfect. Confirmation of the deal with the 51-year-old is expected at a press conference by the FA leadership today. But a number of questions still remain open.
When should Tuchel’s term start?
According to reports, the former coach of Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern will only begin his new adventure at the turn of the year. The Three Lions are scheduled to play the last two Nations League games in Greece and against Ireland in mid-November under interim coach Lee Carsley. Carsley initially took over the job after Gareth Southgate resigned following the lost European Championship final against Spain, but was unable to convince. After the embarrassing 1:2 against Greece the previous week, the association’s leadership intensified its courtship for Tuchel.
How long does Tuchel’s contract last?
Initially, the working paper is probably only dated up to the 2026 World Cup, as Sky reports, among others. At the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico with 48 participants for the first time, England is once again hoping for its first major title since the triumph at the home World Cup in 1966. A tempting goal for Tuchel should also be the 2028 European Championship, where England is a co-host . For the prestigious job in the motherland of football, the coach should be prepared to make significant cuts in salary compared to his recent positions in Munich, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
What about Tuchel’s contract at FC Bayern?
Tuchel actually signed a contract until June 30, 2025 in March 2023 as the successor to Julian Nagelsmann in Munich. However, even before the end of the turbulent and ultimately titleless 2023/24 season, both sides agreed to end the cooperation a year earlier. Despite the contract with Tuchel still being valid, FC Bayern will not demand a transfer fee from the English association, the media report.
Who is Tuchel bringing with him to England?
It is expected that Tuchel wants to bring his confidant Anthony Barry with him as assistant coach to the England national team. He had already worked with the 38-year-old at Chelsea FC and later brought him to Munich as his right-hand man. The man from Liverpool has already been an assistant coach with the Irish, Belgian and Portuguese national teams.
How is Tuchel received in England?
The native of Krumbach would be the third foreigner to take over as England coach after Sven-Göran Eriksson (2000 to 2006) and the Italian Fabio Capello (2008 to 2012). As a coach from the country of the country’s long-standing football arch-rival, Tuchel is likely to initially be greeted cautiously or skeptically on the island. “I wanted an Englishman to coach England,” said long-time Premier League coach Harry Redknapp (77) Sky.
Many of their fans also expressed their disappointment on social media that England’s association could not win Pep Guardiola. After all, Tuchel already knows a few national players from his time at Chelsea and has a strong advocate in his former Bayern protégé Harry Kane. “Fantastic coach, fantastic person,” the England captain said of Tuchel.
