Football: what if the Spanish championship match between Barcelona and Atletico was played in Miami?

A shock from the relocated Spanish championship? On December 22, Barcelona will host Atlético de Madrid at the Montjuic stadium on the weekend of December 22. But this summit shock could take place in… Miami. The idea has been discussed for several months. The Spanish media are already talking about the “Miami Plan”, since Javier Tebas, boss of the Spanish League, is trying to conquer the American market by sending two championship teams to the USA.

This Monday, October 21, the Spanish daily The Country announced that La Liga was working on this relocation, which, to date, is not yet official. Several green lights are expected. First that of the Spanish Federation, then that of UEFA and Fifa. The three authorities opposed a similar project in 2018, but, according to information from El País, the restrictions are much less important than five years ago.

Because this type of relocation highlighting Spanish football could be beneficial for all clubs playing in La Liga. And it is not Fifa which should oppose it: it is in line with the authorization provided by the Fifa council to help the company Relevent, an American company specializing in the organization of events sports, to bring European Championship matches to American territory.

The fact remains that if such a relocation were to actually take place, those who believe that football is far from reality will have cause to cringe. Because from an ecological point of view, the movement of the two teams would have a cost in terms of carbon footprint. Not sure that this is the main argument in the eyes of world football decision-makers.
