Forgotten talent suddenly top again

In 2021, Mia Mack celebrated a remarkable start on the tennis tour: At just 16 years old, she reached the semi-finals once and the round of the last eight several times at the small W15 endurance event in Monastir. Afterwards, however, further successes remained in short supply. At the age of 19, his form curve suddenly shows a steep upward trend again.

Mia Mack is getting a taste of reaching the finals on the tennis tour for the second time in her career. The 19-year-old German is in the semi-finals in Sharm El Sheikh (W15/Egypt).

On the way there, number 1286 in the world rankings had two big surprises. In the round of 16, Mack easily beat Kosovo’s Arlinda Rushiti (number 674 in the world rankings), who is more than 600 places ahead of her, 6:4 and 6:3. In the quarter-finals on Friday there was another triumph against a much better ranked player with a 6:2-6:7-6:2 win against Kazakh Sandugash Kenzhibayeva (number 935 in the world rankings).

However, it is also clear that Mack has to improve again if she wants to make it to the final. In the semi-finals, the top seeded player, Russian Anastasia Gasanova (number 527 in the world rankings), is waiting in Sharm El Sheikh.

Tennis: Mack’s next opponent was overpowering recently

Mack met the 25-year-old in the same place last week, but lost in the first round by a score of 1:6 and 2:6.

In Monastir (W15), however, 18-year-old DTB talent Tessa Brockmann suffered a surprising setback.

The number 691 in the WTA world rankings had to admit defeat in the quarterfinals to the 17-year-old Italian qualifier Vittoria Segattini (so far without world ranking points) with 2:6 and 4:6.

A German player still reached the semi-finals in Tunisia: Luisa Meyer auf der Heide (number 597 in the world rankings) defeated the Austrian Arabella Koller (number 645 in the world rankings) 6:3 and 6:0.

Meyer auf der Heide now meets Lilian Poling from the USA (number 1001 in the world rankings).
