The former champion of the UFC heavyweights Caín Velásquez will have to wait at least until 2025 to hear his sentence for the attempted murder of an alleged pedophile, accused of abusing his son, events for which he was imprisoned for several months and which led to the creation of a support movement from the UFC, with some champions like Khabib Nurmagomedov or Daniel Cormier involved in its defense.
Thus, an official at the Santa Clara County Court of Justice, in San Jose, California, announced that the matter would remain until early 2025, without a new date having been confirmed. Caín Velásquez, 42 years old, is currently out on bail. In August he changed his initial plea from not guilty to no contest.
The former champion, who represented Mexico, faces a dozen charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and others related to the April 2022 incident, in which Velasquez allegedly chased and shot at a car in the that Harry Goularte was traveling, toaccused of abusing Velásquez’s son, who was 4 years old at the time, in a daycare center.
During the incident, another passenger in the car was allegedly hit by a bullet from Velasquez’s gun, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Goularte has a hearing Nov. 13 before his trial on a felony charge of lewd acts with a minor.
The Velasquez family also has a pending civil lawsuit against Goularte, his family and the family’s businesses, which include the daycare where Goularte’s alleged crimes occurred.
