Freddie Freeman settles Yankees case

A grand slam by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the tenth inning allowed the Dodgers to defeat the New York Yankees 6-3 Friday night in Los Angeles, thus dramatically ending Game 1 of the World Series.

Freeman came to the plate with the Dodgers trailing 3-2, with two outs but three runners on. With a single swing, the 35-year-old veteran rolled up Nestor Cortes‘ offering far into the right field stands, thus sowing hysteria in the venerable Dodger Stadium (watch in main video).

It was over for the Yankees, who had given themselves a good chance to win a little earlier, when Jazz Chisholm Jr. crossed home plate on a grounder from Anthony Volpe.

Tommy Edman had a good game on offense for Los Angeles, hitting two hits. The Dodgers’ big Japanese star, Shohei Ohtani, was limited to a double in five at-bats, notably missing his chance to close the books in the tenth before Freeman did.

On the Yankees side, slugger Giancarlo Stanton once again stood out by hitting his sixth home run of the series in the sixth inning.

Reliever Blake Treinen (1-0) inherited the victory. The defeat went to right-hander Jake Cousins (0-1).

The second game of the World Series will take place on Saturday, still in Los Angeles.
