Freeman’s home run in the 10th gives Dodgers victory over Yankees in vibrant start to World Series

Freddie Freeman ended the game with a grand slam, an unprecedented feat in the World Series, when there were two outs in the tenth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 6-3 on Friday in a vibrant start of the Fall Classic

Suffering from a severely sprained ankle, Freeman hit a home run on the first pitch he saw — an inside fastball from Cuban Néstor Cortes. The star then dropped the bat and began to trot as he was greeted with a roar by the crowd of 52,394 that filled Dodger Stadium.

In the top of the tenth inning, Anthony Volpe hit shortstop for a fielder’s choice that drove in Jazz Chisholm Jr., who had stolen two bases, from third base, to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

It was the third consecutive time that the first game of the World Series went into extra innings.

The speedy Chisholm singled off Blake Treinen and then stole second and third for a Yankees team not known for its speed.

But the Dodgers had a dramatic outcome scheduled.

For the Yankees, Venezuelan Gleyber Torres is 5-2. Dominican Juan Soto was 3-1 with one run scored. Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-1.

For the Dodgers, Dominican Teoscar Hernández 4-1. Puerto Rican Kiké Hernández 3-1 with one scored.
